Mestizo Beat is a collective of musicians based out of Los Angeles who compose and perform music influenced by the early 1970’s era of funk, soul, afro-beat, and afro-cuban genre. Termed as “music for the people” with songs and compositions that drives the audience into rhythm, groove, dance, and ecstasy. Formed by lead guitarist Aquiles “Lito” Magaña along with his brother Gus Magaña on drums. These two would come to share their passion and love for this era of music and become the driving core for the group. Influenced by the greats such as James Brown, Fred Wesley and the J.B.’s, Parliament Funkadelic, the Meters, and WAR.

The word Mestizo means the mix and blend of cultural heritage; you cannot find a better word to describe the blending of music, environment, and roots that takes place in Los Angeles, which is one of the most diverse regions in the world. The band members come from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds that enrich the music created and performed.

EAST LOS MEETS LAGOS (NIGERIA)!
Mexico68 Afrobeat Orchestra is L.A’s-own Afrobeat powerhouse that is profoundly inspired by the creative genius of Nigerian musician and activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his classic bands, Afrika 70 and Egypt 80. Mexico68 pays respect to the originators of Afrobeat by laboring to faithfully execute their original music, and various Fela covers, as closely as possible to the original sources, while yet infusing their unique experiences, perspectives, and struggles. Even though Mexico68 is a diverse band, consisting of 13 members who hail primarily from East Los Angeles, and surrounding Southern California neighborhoods and cities, the band’s heart and soul are deeply rooted deeply in the East Side of Los Angeles. mexico68 has shared the stage with many amazing bands and musicians, such as Lee Scratch Perry, The Abyssinians, Red Baraat, Chicano Batman, Jungle Fire, Ethio Cali, Western Standard Time, Anthony B, Pato Banton, The Lions, Buyepongo, Monophonics, as well s various exciting and interesting bands from Los Angeles.
