Out of the darkness, emotional distress and pain that can only come from the heart-wrenching end of a long-term relationship, veteran West Coast songwriters Andrew King (Crystal Antlers) and Ashton Leech (Tweak Bird) have created a masterclass of a breakup album. King notes that he started writing with Leech out of necessity, “… he was someone I could talk to, to make sense of all the sadness.”
D.R.E.A.M. is a new project but this is far from the first sonic rodeo for the group’s seasoned players. Their collective experience in the West Coast music scene is deep and the list of projects they’ve been a part of is lengthy. The drummer, Dan Allaire, has held it down for some heavy weights including Darker My Love, Cass McCombs and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Auxiliary guitarist, Evan apRoberts (Breezers), has backed up many bands and songwriters including Michael Nau, Pink Mountaintops, Little Wings and Kath Bloom. Bassist, Amit Singh claims to have been a part of “nothing worth mentioning” but his steady, rooted approach to providing the low end for D.R.E.A.M. is certainly worth a mention.
The soon to be released debut album and its six songs are emotive and beautiful, filled with tear-jerking images, expertly crafted melodies and lyrics that send the listener on a super sad ride through the exquisite landscapes of a broken heart.
